PWMS Social Studies League Places Among the Top Schools in the Nation

8th grade Social Studies students from Parkwood Middle School have placed among the top schools in the nation for the third year in a row. The students recently competed in the National Social Studies League competition. Taking the exam along with schools from 15 other states, the students competed against their peers on a wide range of American History topics. The National Social Studies League exams are administered once a year to students from grades 2 through 12. The test measures students’ knowledge of American history from the colonial to the modern era. The contests serve as a valuable supplement to school programs and aid schools in helping their students improve their reading comprehension and problem solving skills. For the last 31 years, this national competition has generated student participation and excitement.

James Crump (WWII), Bill Raum (Vietnam), Jim Hood (Vietnam), and Bill Lane (Vietnam) came from the Indian Trail VFW to talk to the students about what they encountered during war. This goes right along with the 7th grade social studies curriculum because the students are currently learning about WWII and will be moving on to Vietnam shortly.
